Graze, Jake Amy

Updated: May 3

Renowned Australian nu-jazz keyboardist Jake Amy is set to unveil their latest single, "Graze," an exhilarating journey through the avant-garde edges of jazz. Released in late November 2024 via Amsterdam’s acclaimed Wicked Wax label, "Graze" offers a high-energy, jungle-infused soundscape that pushes the boundaries of modern jazz. At its heart is a mesmerising Fender Rhodes solo, where Jake’s keyboard virtuosity shines, conjuring a soundscape reminiscent of Thundercat’s signature style—but through the lens of the keys.

The track features the exceptional drumming of Jordan Pereira, whose fresh and intricate rhythms draw inspiration from the likes of Yussef Dayes, Noah Fürbringer, JD Beck, and Roni Kaspi. It’s rare to hear such a nuanced and innovative drumming performance from an Australian artist, making "Graze" a standout in the current music landscape.

With Stephen Lane on bass, the trio delivers a powerful sonic experience that is both technically brilliant and emotionally resonant. Produced and composed by Jake Amy, and mastered by the renowned Nick Herrera, "Graze" was recorded at Sunderland Studios, with artwork created by Gabriella Brown (Soft Edges), capturing the essence of the track’s intense energy.

"Graze" is more than just a musical composition; it’s a deeply personal reflection on the challenges of being a highly sought-after session musician. Jake Amy, who identifies as non-binary and queer, shares a raw and honest exploration of the pressures that come with a relentless work ethic. The track serves as a sonic reminder to slow down and seek balance amidst the demands of a life immersed in music.

Jake’s dedication to their craft is both their greatest strength and their greatest challenge. Working up to 100 hours a week, they have often found themselves neglecting basic needs like eating and sleeping. "Graze" marks a turning point—a moment of recognition and a call to pause, even as the world demands more.

Following their previous release, "Yoofee," in September 2024, "Graze" continues to contribute to important conversations about diversity and representation in the music industry, highlighting Jake’s unique perspective as a non-binary artist.
